Ake Nordin – Founder of Fjallraven – 1960
Fjallraven has been known for building high quality, innovative gear since 1960 and to this day this hasn’t changed. The Kanken backpack made Fjallraven famous the world over, but the Vintage series of backpacks truly shows how Fjallraven has mastered the art of bringing old and new together. At first glance the Vintage backpacks look simple with their two side pockets and one main compartment. All pockets are closed with a simple leather strap and metal buckles. That is where the simplicity ends. This pack is manufactured with a G-1000 outer. This amazing material is more durable than denim and can easily be made more waterproof by applying Fjallraven’s Greenland wax! The complexity doesn’t end there. The suspension system is a lightweight frame system with mesh backing to allow for airflow between your back and the bag. This prevents sweating when using the backpack keeping the experience as pleasant as possible.
The Vintage packs are available in a wide variety of colors. They are available in both a 20 and 30 litre configuration making this pack an ideal choice as an everyday backpack or a great bag for an overnight trek!

There are quite a few company’s that claim heritage in the products that they make, but very few actually follow through and continue those traditions of the past. Meindl is one of those companies that actually honors the heritage of their ancestors. A family company that can trace it’s roots back to 1683 in the German village of Kirchaschoring. Still today, Meindl is run and owned by the family that founded it and it’s main production facility and warehouse can be found in the same town. Many models are still made in the Kirchaschoring including their genuine double and triple stitched boots. Four models in their hiking/outdoor selection are made this way and range from day hiker up to a fully rigid traditional mountaineering boot (red laces and all). Very few companies are willing to make products that require so much skill and precision of their employees. These boots are truly handmade are can be considered works of art.
The Meindl Super Perfekt is the ultimate traditional mountaineering boot. Made in the traditional fashion with triple-stitched soles, a full leather lining and an outer made of Swiss Military Leather. This is the thickest and toughest leather a boot can be made from and is designed to stand the test of time. For more information, visit the Meindl Super Perfekt page on our webstore.
The Meindl Perfekt is a step down from the Super Perfekt. This boot is designed to be used as a traditional backpacking boot for longer trips. It is made with a tradition double stitched sole, a full leather lining and a one piece Sil-Russian Leather upper. This boot is the definitive traditional backpacking boot. For more information, visit the Meindl Perfekt page in our webstore.
Meindl is one of the few companies left that has skilled enough shoemakers to make these traditional boots. The craftsmanship and skill of the artisans that produce these boots is shown in every single pair and are a testament to the quality and craftsmanship of all shoes that are made by Meindl. Check out all the of the Genuine Stitched Boots. For a glimpse of the history of Meindl and production processes of these and other boots, check out this video!

When a product is around for even three or four years it can be assumed that it has gained a great reputation and a loyal bunch of followers. 20 years on the other hand and you know it has been in the hands of many people and many can be considered owners a few times over. The Meindl Island is one of these products. For over 20 years Meindl has produced the Island backpacking boot. Over the years it has seen a few refreshes and updates but overall it is still the same base principal that started it all in the 90′s. Developed as a great mid-level backpacking boot, it has great torsional stability, a rolled last for easy walking, meindl’s unique multigriff sole by Vibram and a Gore-tex liner. This has been a constant over it’s life and still rings true today. Over 1 million pairs have been sold and the number continues to grow steadily as does the number of awards from countless publications and outdoor industry groups. The other constant is that this boot has been made by hand in Kirchanschoering, Germany (the home of Meindl) since it’s inception. 2010 saw the anniversary party begin with a revised model that introduced a improved breathing system, a new “soft-print” insole system, an improved lacing system and of course the Meindl Memory Foam System (MFS System). For 2012 Spring season, the Meindl Island will see a new addition to its family that already includes a standard men’s model as well as a wide fitting model, a ladies standard and narrow fitting model will be the Meindl Island “Identity”. This model will feature all the trimmings of the regular models but will be made with organic leather that is sourced close to the factory to reduce its impact on the planet. Additionally the leather will be traceable to the farm from which it came by a unique ID found inside the boot.

When it comes to environmental stewardship, Fjallraven is a leader in the outdoor industry. With many packs that are climate compensated, clothing made from recycled and organic materials and the introduction of their new Eco-Shell material that is made from fully recycled materials and is fully recyclable at end of life, Fjallraven seeks to ensure that the outdoors are there to be enjoyed by many generations to come. With that, Fjallraven has made a very special edition of their legendary Kanken backpack that benefits the preservation of their namesake the Arctic Fox. This backpack that hasn’t changed one bit since it’s initial release in 1978 is made in white to represent the color of the Arctic fox as well as a small embroidery of the eyes and nose of this magestic animal. To add to this, Fjallraven will donate 10 euros from the sale of this special backpack to benefit the preservation of the Arctic Fox. Add in the fact that this bag is fully climate compensated (like all kanken backpacks) and you have a bag that is not only stylish but good for the planet!
